Content Encoding Error after installing field type

Hello,
EE v5.3.0
After adding a Smart Members field to one of my channels, I received the generic browser error “Content Encoding Error. An error occurred during a connection to mysite.com”. I turned on EE debugging but the error is as far as the page will render, it doesn’t even make it to the EE debugging stage.
Once I delete the field, the site starts working normally again. Please let me know if there is any other information you need to help debug this.
