When submitting the sitemap to google et.al I’m a little confused. Their examples would have me submit ...sitemap.xml but the only thing that produces a result is ...sitemap.php
I assume that I submit sitemap.php ... right?

yes that’s correct. sitemap.php sends headers to say that it is encoded as xml so search engines won’t have any problems with it.

Another question ... since I have you on the line ... does this just index posts from here forward, or does it go back to the beginning of my site?

My blog has been running since 2004. There are 6,000 posts. Does the sitemap include all of those, or only the posts I create since the installation of the sitemap.

it will contain them all, provided you include the appropriate channels/weblogs in the module settings
