It would be nice to be able to choose which member groups to show.
I’d like to choose from ‘staff’ members, but this site also has member registration. So the dropdown can have a ton of people to scroll through.

A brilliant fieldtype, very useful thank you but I second this request.
In the meantime I just hacked the function and added this at line 30
$this->EE->db->where('exp_members.group_id', '6');
where 6 is my required group_id.
i suppose just adding a field into the settings area would sort that out for ease of use.

You may want to try VZ Members. It already has this capability.
