Enable Strict URLs directs to 404 for Sitemap.xml

If I Enable Strict URLs and then go to…
example.com/site/site.xml
...it re-directs me to the site’s 404 page. It doesn’t do this when Enable Strict URLs is turned off?
How can I get around this?

The plugin won`t interact with your url routing. You got probably a fault in the template group structure.
Can you remove any of the google site map plugin code from the page, is the page than workin?
