On pages where we’re not using any maps we’re seeing a lot of gmap_ext calls which add about 20% to load times. Any ideas on how to eliminate or even reduce these?

I love Google Maps for ExpressionEngine. It’s a great tool for quickly adding maps to your site and getting it up and running quickly. It’s also very easy to use. It is not as easy as other mapping tools, such as Map Maker or Map Studio (both of which are free) but if you’re looking for a quick solution, then this is an excellent choice.
