Not working: displays {category_count} to the output instead of the number

I have installed the plugin by creating a folder called bw_category_count in the /system/expressionengine/third_party/ folder (though my system folder has been renamed).
I put the ext.bw_category_count.php inside the folder. I installed the extension in the control panel.
It does show as Installed (enabled) in the panel.
When I put {category_count} in a template inside the channel entries tag, the output is just {category_count}, as opposed to a number. It’s as if it does not recognize it as a tag. Did I miss something in the install? I am on EE 2.8.1.
