Editor's Pick
Each month the devot:ee staff picks an add-on that's especially well thought out, well built, and useful. They're add-ons that we love and think you will too!

Low Seg2Cat was chosen in June 2013.

Low Seg2Cat loops through the segments of the current URI, matches them against categories, and registers the matching categories as global variables, which you can use in your templates.

For more info, documentation and free download, go to Low.

Hooks Used

If the add-on is an extension, and ties into ExpressionEngine's core files, it will use ExpressionEngine hooks. We are listing any hooks the add-on uses for developers to have an easier time locating other add-ons that they can reference for their own work.

  1. sessions_end
  2. template_fetch_template

If you’re using EE’s categories on your site, you’re going to want this. Thanks for making this available Lodewijk.

I don’t know what I would do without {segment_n_category_id} ! :D

Thank you!

Not only is this add-on super simple to use when you just want to get the current category you’re viewing, it also enabled me to restrict results when an arbitrary cat_url_title is typed. (By default EE will show you all entries from the channel)

I had a project that was really putting the screws to me, but I found this little gem that is brilliant and worked like a champ I am now going to purchase a few of their add-ons :)

If you’re developing anything remotely ‘blog’ oriented, this is essential. Developing anything with category involvement, this is essential. Developing anything else, there’s probably some time saved anyway. Low is awesome.

Should be integral to EE as standard. Brilliant.

I have to echo what everyone else is saying. It’s SO useful if you use category_url_title in your paths. Thanks for making this free.

Another excellent add-on from Low. So easy to use, great docs and support.  This is a must have if you use category names in your URLs. I’ve just rediscovered it after searching for category group ID on EE forums. Can I suggest category group is added to the tags for it here?

Extremely elegant and greatly simplifies what should be simple in the first place, a must have if working with categories.

Made it really easy to output a category name from a url_title found in a URL segment. Took 30 secs to install and implement. Great add-on!

Greatly simplifies the use of categories. As a novice user I couldn’t work out how to use categories without the category trigger in the URL. Enter Seg2Cat. Problem solved, bacon saved.

A great way to get information about your categories just by using what’s already in the URI. Simple, yet elegant. A must have if you’re working with categories.

Seg2Cat is enormously helpful if you’re dealing with categories. It takes care of a seemingly simple thing (just give me the category ID number, please!) I used to write PHP queries to accomplish. Highly recommended!
