I needed a simple way to count page hits over a certain timeframe, and do it accurately from behind Varnish caching. Using Google Analytics would be a good alternate solution, but this little module seems to be working so far.

The module uses a snippet of javascript to POST hits to a the hit counting module in the control panel, which registers the time of each hit.  To try to prevent this table from growing too large on a busy site, there’s also a summarization step that reduces data to hits per page, by day.

Template tags then let you find number of hits for a page, or produce a list of top N pages.  Future requirements may expand functionality as needed.
