Editor's Pick
Each month the devot:ee staff picks an add-on that's especially well thought out, well built, and useful. They're add-ons that we love and think you will too!

GWcode Categories was chosen in August 2012.

List all, last child categories, or categories of a certain (minimum, maximum, fixed) depth, for one or more channels, for one or more category groups, for an entry or overall. Get child categories, or parent categories. Show entry count, custom category fields. And more.

If you’re having trouble selecting the right categories, this plugin could come in handy.

You basically pick a starting point first to get a list of categories and then narrow it down by choosing from a wide variety of parameters. Your starting point can be:

  • One or more channels by using the channel parameter (to get the categories for those channels);
  • One or more category groups by using the group_id parameter (to get the categories for those category groups);
  • An entry (to get the categories the entry has been added to);
  • A category (to get its child categories, or parent categories).

Then if needed, you can narrow down the resulting list of categories to get what you want, by using parameters such as depth, last_only, show_empty, excl_cat_id, etc.

Multiple examples can be found here. All available parameters and variables can be found here.

Super flexible. Have used this on many sites - basically any site where we use categories. Lots of tags, fast, decent docs. If you’re dealing with categories, this is a winner.

Fantasitic addon.  Provides the flexibility we need for categories, and is now part of our default setup.

There isn’t enough good to be said about this add-on. It saved me hours of time displaying categories to match the designer’s vision with the editor’s flexibility in mind!

Brilliant plugin. Used it for years - always delivers where EE is really rather lacking.

Thanks for this. It works very well and has perfect functionality for what I need. EE should have this built in.

Sorry for the 4 stars. Very awesome plugin but I came across some parse order issues where normal channel entries tags, stash vars or low vars would not work inside the gw tags and I ended up using embeds to sort out. But definitely in default install of every project!

The best help I’ve found for getting around the limitations of categories in EE. One of those how-did-we-cope-before-this kinda finds.

Hands down - this is one of the best plugins I’ve used. I’m a newbie developer and I was up and running in 3 minutes. Excellent functionality, and so intuitive to use.

I really do not know what I would do without this plugin. It is so efficient and well documented. I think I’ll use it with every EE site I would build.

When you hit a brick wall using EE’s native category module, chances are this add-on will get you where you need to be. This and seg2cat are in my default EE install, no higher praise than that. Still free so donate if it helped you out!

It is a crime that this add-on is free, considering it does everything the native category module should do, and about a thousand things more. Dead simple to use, it will be on my default add-ons list from now on. Donate to the developer if you can, it’s worth every penny.

I wanted a URL structure for categories that is like Structure’s, following the structure of the category entries. I was pleasantly surprised that GWcode Categories let me do this pretty easily. I also like the use of tables in the docs for parameters and variables.

Had used Child Categories before this, but this makes extending EE’s cat tags even easier than that. While I still think this stuff should be built-in natively, it’s great to see this is available as a free plugin to fellow devs. Great feedback when I had a question, too!

A very detailed addon and a first port of call when working with categories for anything other than the absolute basics. Great documentation and support. It’s great to see that addons of this calibre are still available for free. Thanks Leon.

Categories have always been a pian in the ass and never do what you need. GWcode Categories changes all that - if you can think it, then you can probably do it with this AMAZING add-on. I think free add-ons need a donate button on their devotee page!

Great work Leon!

A really well thought out and put together add-on, with top-notch support (especially for a free add-on).  I’ll be going to this first when I need category control that’s more in depth then the native options from now on.

I was getting tired of wrapping my head around EE code to try and reproduce what this plugin does so well.

I especially liked the complete path feature.  Thanks.

Building a site with categories?
Yes, categories are easy to maintain for your clients. But they are a pain with native EE-code. Guess who is knocking on the door? GWcode Categories! Easy, peasy and very versatile, just what you would expect from native EE-tags. Thumbs up for Leon!

This plugin is just getting better and better and even better. Furthermore, Leon is really dedicated – he just added more parametres according to my needs on a special case. What more can you ask for?!

Totally impressed by this plugin. Combined with @low’s seg2cat extension, the possibilities are endless.

And.. I shaved 40 queries off my page load using this instead of the ‘EE2 Child Categories’ plugin.

Top, top work.

This plug-in has been a life-saver for me in a recent EE client site (and it has remained 100% stable on an upgrade from 2.1.3 to 2.2.0).

It’s such a solid good quality Plugin!

Highly recommended.

Well done Leon! :-)

Just a fabulous add-on. The flexibility is quite amazing, and it saves you from writing query tags or custom PHP to display complex category structure.

Highly recommended, even more so as it does more than some of the commercial ones.
