CE Lossless losslessly compresses images that are created by CE Image or uploaded to EE via native file uploading. It makes images smaller, which saves on bandwidth and site speed.

A win-win situation

Lossless compression, which is the opposite of lossy compression, is a way to reduce an image’s size without the loss of visible quality. It generally entails reorganizing the image’s data in a more efficient way, increasing compression, and removing unnecessary chunks of data. In other words, smaller images with the same quality.

Here’s why you would want to use CE Lossless in your site:

No quality loss - Losslessly compressed images appear the same as the originals.
Smaller file sizes - Your image sizes will usually be smaller than the originals, even when saved from industry leading software like Photoshop. Smaller file sizes translate to:

  • Lower bandwidth usage
  • Faster page loads
  • Less storage usage

There are ancillary benefits to be had as well. For example, Google Page Speed takes image compression into account when calculating your score.

Needs a note here that Yahoo has abandoned smush.it so if your server doesn’t support one of the image compression technologies supported by CE:lossless there is no fallback.

CE Image is already one of my most used/favorite add ons, and it is great to see this additional functionality added. I especially appreciate having more control over PNG images. Yet another awesome add-on by Causing Effect!

Tested 500 JPEG photos with both libraries & found that setting CE Image’s quality parameter to 84 reduces file size by 72% while maintaining acceptable image quality; adding CE Lossless bumped savings 1.7% to 73.7%.

It’s well supported, easy to install & will do better w/ other img types/styles.
