Hi MacObserver!
storing everything as flat files. We’ve now got over 30k items in the cache
Hmm. That is a lot of cache items for file caching. This is not necessarily a problem if the cache time-to-live setting (seconds=”“) is set to never expire, and the items are set to break only as needed, but otherwise it could be overtaxing the server’s file system. How is the server’s file system and memory usage?
For a site of that size, I recommend setting up a Redis server on the same server (or even better, another server on the same network) and cache to Redis. It is faster and seems to be able to find things much quicker without putting as much strain on the server. Additionally, make sure cache items are only cleared or broken when necessary. You’ll want to set up cache breaking.
Is there something about CE Cache that has it die after 5 seconds?
No.
Is there some timeout or otherwise something that’s causing this?
It’s possible. It could be hitting a PHP or Apache timeout setting, but it seems that is not the problem. You may want to check your Apache and PHP error logs and see if there is an error that is preventing the response from being returned.
Just trying to narrow this down and figured I’d ask here first in case it’s a known thing with a solution.
I don’t think I have run into this issue, and I don’t believe I’ve had a support request with this issue (that I can remember off the top of my head anyway). You may also check with your hosting company to see if they have ever run across an issue where a script will intermittently time out after 5 seconds.
Please let me know what you find out!
