Database backup incomplete

The database back up is always truncated. Unzipped as produced by Back Up Pro the sql file is 33.1 mb whereas exported from phpMyAdmin it’s 39.5 mb. When we import the Back Up Pro-produced db into an empty mysql db it is incomplete.
We’re using backup pro only for db backups. We’re running EE 2.9 and Backup Pro 1.9.4 and using PHP 5.4. All the site’s add-ons are up to date. Our host doesn’t support wget so we’re using curl.
max_execution_time is 1200 and memory_limit is 512M.
We turned on debug mode, relaunched EE, and went to the link for the db as found in the settings and it produced no error messages, just an empty page.
Any suggestions? For now we’re creating back ups manually.
