Membrr for ExpressionEngine brings the power of subscription billing and memberships to your website. Create subscription plans, manage your billing, accept payments via multiple payment gateways, and earn recurring revenue with Membrr.

Membrr has a downloadable module/extension pack that is compatible with both ExpressionEngine 2 and ExpressionEngine 1.6.8.  Once installed, you will have access to a Membrr control panel from within your EE control panel.  Here you can manage subscriptions, create new subscriptions, view payment histories, and edit your subscription plans.  All subscription and membership creations and expirations are handled automatically, including the ability to move the user into a new membergroup upon subscription/expiration.

Membrr integrates into ExpressionEngine with a comprehensive set of template tags.  It even includes the ability to setup Channel (Weblog) Protection.  With this feature, you can require subscriptions to make a post to any “protected” channel.  This is perfect for directory listings, self-serve advertisements, paid blogging, job listings, etc.

Membrr is a secure platform, with all gateway information encrypted and zero credit card information stored locally.  All credit card processing (even recurring billing) is done with your gateway’s native recurring billing systems so that we don’t need to store sensitive credit card information on your servers.

Currently, Membrr supports the following payment gateways: Authorize.net, PayPal Express Checkout, PayPal Pro, SagePay, E-xact, and Wirecard.

Hooks Used

If the add-on is an extension, and ties into ExpressionEngine's core files, it will use ExpressionEngine hooks. We are listing any hooks the add-on uses for developers to have an easier time locating other add-ons that they can reference for their own work.

  1. weblog_standalone_form_start
  2. weblog_standalone_insert_entry

I’m really sorry to give a plugin with such potential a horrible rating, but it has been nothing but frustrating to work with.

Once you get under the surface it starts to fall apart.

Can’t send confirmations by payment type, can’t do sales tax, slow and unhelpful support (sry brock).

Great news, Membrr and OpenGateway are now open source and not ionCube protected - https://github.com/electricfunction

Since it’s unlikely Electric Function will be available to accept pull requests, I’ll do it here: https://github.com/westhouseit/membrr

Thanks Brock!

I set up everything without a hitch in EE 2.5.5, switched to 2.6.1 and all is still good.  Not sure what the bigs are but I have not found them yet and I am a fanatic about testing and re-testing.  Overall once you get past setting everything up it’s all good.  Stands improving but good for me :)

I’ve used Membrr a couple times before without a hitch. Decided to use it instead of another subscription add-on for a client. Both the client and I are disappointed in the bugs that we’ve run into. I’m especially disappointed in support (slow, if I get a response at all).

Unfortunately, I have to second the reviews about the quality of support. It’s plain annoying!

Response times are ridiculously slow and answers to the simplest of questions fuzzy at best.

And it’s true, negative feedback is commented out, so that none of it will ever get seen by other users.

Membrr was always a pain in the neck to use, but it appeared to work.
I have painfully discovered recently that it does not work reliably.

Original developer no longer involved. Current support staff hide negative support threads by setting them to “private”

Avoid!

Pros: A really great and much-needed way to get subscription payments running on your EE site. Lots of features and easy to integrate. Quick and professional support.

Cons: It’s a hassle to set up and presently you have to use two separate logins to manage subscriptions.

Membrr support is very good, which is nice, but the product is so hard to work with (and explain to clients) that you’ll need to be in touch with support far more often than you would like, which is less nice.

We’ve used this on a recent project and it’s been nothing short of awesome. The opengateway integration and API makes it really easy to allow partner sites or accounts depts. to get at the member and payment status data.

You can do so much with this and support is first class.

Membrr is a really nice add-on. Brock is continually improving upon an already great product and is quick to offer support for any questions/issues.

This is an incredibly well-designed module that allows you to sell an unlimited number of subscription types (both recurring and non-recurring).

Best of all, it works seamlessly with SAEFs allowing you to sell weblog entries till the cows come home…  Highly, highly recommended.
